The television series, American Horror Story and Nip/Tuck both portray horrific and violent imagery. From the Nip/Tuck episode shown in class, there were a lot of graphic and disturbing parts to watch. In Nip/Tuck one of the most graphic scenes is of a surgical procedure and the medical waste that spilled from the car. The most disturbing theme is the action of taking one’s kidney. The series showed the easiness of simply drugging or seducing one to get the character’s kidney. Violence on TV is acceptable and is popular in American television. People have become conditioned to violence because it is common. A frightening trend within the horror genre is how viewers will support the “bad guy/girl.” Because the viewer sees the bad guy/girl living a double life, having a family, going to church, but still be killing left and right. Because he/she has shown that delicate part of his/her life, the character may not be seen as evil and will be supported by the audience. It is true that violence and graphic scenes are becoming more and more acceptable. We see American Horror Story is a hit television series despite the graphic content. Nip/Tuck and American Horror Story approach two opposite views through horror. Nip/Tuck is concerned with people reaching “perfection”. AHS is not concerned with perfection. They portray characters with two heads, a bearded lady, and other abnormalities. Despite the horror in both Nip/Tuck and AHS, they do not shy away from portraying violence and horror in a different and inventive way.
I thought it would be interesting to share this link I found on Buzzfeed of some people who dressed up as Twisty the clown for Halloween this year! Pretty scary if you ask me.
