While
scouring the Internet for critics and perusing their work to find one
who’s style I like and can even relate to, I stumbled across Matt Roush.
He seems to write exclusively for TV Guide, not that there is anything
wrong with that. His review of season one of “Game of Thrones” is
particularly spot-on and does a great amount of justice to the show in
just a few short paragraphs.
His style
could be shown as snarky but he uses enough well-crafted analogies to
get his point across in a much classier manner than some of the other
critics I looked at. I always find the best way to paint a picture in
somebody else’s head is to use analogies and comparisons. He also uses
words from the show- like “imp” when referring to Tyrion- to better
portray the feel of the setting.
He is
clearly not a fan of Television shows that are spin-offs of once popular
movies, which I can totally get behind. A problem I have with his
negative reviews, however, is that even though he is saying all that he
can against stink-bombs such as “Napolean Dynamite: Season One,” he
still seems a little too nice about it. I almost admire that about him
because I would be a little more tempted to rub salt into the wounds I
create when critiquing.
Roush has a
very sophisticated vocabulary that doesn’t overwhelm with wordiness,
but does sometimes seem to stretch his sentences a little too far.
